Touraine: châteaux, Chenin Blanc, and flat river roads

Around 200 km of marked cycling routes link the Loire, Cher, and Indre river valleys.

The département with the densest concentration of Loire Valley châteaux

Indre-et-Loire — historically Touraine — sits where the Loire, Cher, Indre, and Vienne rivers converge. The département holds more of the Loire Valley's UNESCO-listed châteaux than any other: Chenonceau, Villandry, Amboise, Azay-le-Rideau, Chinon, and Langeais are all here. Its wine appellations are just as specific: Vouvray produces Chenin Blanc from tuffeau-limestone hillsides above the Loire's north bank, aged in caves cut into the same rock; Chinon, across the Vienne, makes Cabernet Franc reds whose style shifts with the soil — gravel, clay, or tuffeau. The main city, Tours, sits at the midpoint of the Loire à Vélo route.

Une très belle expérience avec Tim. J’ai demandé un devis et l’ai reçu dès le lendemain, à un prix tout à fait raisonnable pour le service proposé. Deux vélos, avec antivol, casques et paniers, ont été livrés…

Château to château by e-bike
The Loire à Vélo covers around 200 km through Indre-et-Loire alone, linking Amboise, Chenonceau, Villandry, and Azay-le-Rideau on largely flat riverside paths. The distances between sites — typically 20–50 km per leg — are straightforward on an ease-see e-bike but a real ask on a plain one, especially over a multi-day trip. The motor means you arrive at the next château without having spent everything getting there.
Vouvray wine country on two wheels
The Vouvray vineyards run along low tuffeau hills on the Loire's north bank east of Tours — pleasant enough terrain on paper, but the undulation between river level and the plateau adds up over 20–30 km. An ease-see e-bike handles the rises without turning a wine-country ride into a fitness test, leaving energy for the cave tastings that are the actual point.
