Hot Air Balloons – Centre-Val de Loire

The châteaux of the Loire, from a balloon

Centre-Val de Loire is château country, and a balloon is the one way to take in a whole valley of them at once, at sunrise or sunset.

A brightly striped red, blue and yellow hot air balloon floats above the Château de Chenonceau, which spans the River Cher amid dense green woodland in the Loire Valley.

A land of rivers and châteaux

The Loire and the rivers that join it, among them the Vienne, the Cher and the Indre, run past royal fortresses, Renaissance châteaux, vineyards and forests. From a balloon you see how they fit together, a whole landscape at once. Where you drift depends on the wind on the day.

Your flight, step by step

A view looking up from inside a hot air balloon basket, showing a gloved hand operating the burner with an open flame heating the purple and red envelope above against a clear blue sky.

Inflation

The envelope fills with air, then the burner’s flame lifts it upright

An aerial view of the Château d'Amboise and its surrounding historic town, with the wide River Loire curving through lush green landscape beyond.

Up, up and away

The valley opens out below: the river, the vineyards and the châteaux along its banks

Two crew members in matching dark shirts and red caps work together to manage the rigging ropes of a red hot air balloon as it deflates on landing in an open field at dusk or dawn.

Landing

Down in a field, then a toast to the flight
