Anjou's vineyards and tuffeau, on two wheels
Maine-et-Loire holds the greatest concentration of troglodyte cave dwellings in France, with around 1,000 km of galleries carved into the region's soft tuffeau limestone. These underground spaces — used for centuries as homes, wine cellars, mushroom farms, and quarries — are found across dozens of the département's communes, including Saumur, Montsoreau, Doué-en-Anjou, Turquant, Dénezé-sous-Doué, and Louresse-Rochemenier.
Chenin Blanc, tuffeau caves, and 200 km of flat riverside path
Maine-et-Loire is the core of the Anjou-Saumur wine zone, producing Chenin Blanc in forms that range from bone-dry Savennières to the sweet Coteaux du Layon and Bonnezeaux appellations — all within cycling distance of each other along the Loire's left bank. The soft tuffeau limestone that underlies much of the department was quarried for centuries to build the Loire châteaux, and the resulting caves became cellars, mushroom farms, and — around Saumur and Doué-la-Fontaine — entire inhabited underground settlements. La Loire à Vélo (EuroVelo 6) runs through the département on largely flat levée paths and traffic-free greenways, passing vineyards, river islands, and tuffeau cliffs from Saumur west through Angers to the Loire-Atlantique border.

We had a lovely Kayak on the Thouet. It was very relaxing and peaceful, we saw lots of Kingfishers, herons and we think Bittens. Tim was helpful and replied to our enquires very quickly.

E-bike rental with SaumurBikeHire, Saumur Vineyard-to-vineyard riding between Anjou appellations
The Coteaux du Layon, Savennières, and Saumur-Champigny appellations sit close together but are separated by distances that add up to a long day on a plain bike — especially when the route climbs off the flat levée and onto the vine-covered hillsides. An e-bike levels that out, making it practical to visit multiple domaines in a day rather than picking one and turning back.
Reaching the tuffeau cave sites around Saumur
Sites such as Rochemenier, Brézé, and Doué-la-Fontaine are scattered across the plateau south of the Loire and not served well by public transport. The distances between them are manageable on an e-bike; on a plain bike, the rolling plateau terrain between sites turns a loose itinerary into a hard day's work.
Fontevraud Abbey and the Plantagenêt connection
Fontevraud Abbey, near Saumur, was the burial site of the Plantagenêt dynasty, including Henry II of England, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Richard I. Founded in 1101, it is one of the largest surviving abbey complexes in France.
