Poitiers: a hilltop city of Romanesque stone

The old centre sits on a plateau above the Clain, its churches within easy walking distance of each other.

Notre-Dame-la-Grande and a city built for slow looking

Poitiers sits on a limestone plateau above the rivers Clain and Boivre, and the old centre is compact enough to cross on foot in under twenty minutes. The main draw is the density of medieval buildings: Notre-Dame-la-Grande has a 12th-century façade covered in carved biblical scenes, apostles and fantastical animals — considered one of the finest examples of Poitevin Romanesque in France. The Baptistery of Saint-Jean, Saint-Pierre Cathedral and the Palace of the Counts of Poitou are all within the same short loop. Beyond the hilltop, the Clain valley opens out into quieter lanes and river paths that the old town's steep streets don't hint at.
The old town on two wheels
The hilltop centre is pedestrianised and the streets are short, but getting up from the Clain valley to the plateau involves a real climb. An e-bike takes the sting out of it, so you spend your time looking at the buildings rather than catching your breath on the way up.
Lanes along the Clain and Boivre
Signed cycling routes run along the river valleys below the city, including sections of the V94 national cycle route and the EuroVelo 3 (Scandibérique). The terrain down by the water is flat and quiet. An e-bike lets you follow these river paths at your own pace and still have enough in reserve for the return climb into town.
