Saumur, at the pace it was built for
A white town above the Loire — château on the hill, vineyards at the edge, cellars cut into the rock beneath your feet. Close enough to touch on foot or by bike.
A town carved from its own stone
Saumur is built almost entirely from tuffeau — the soft white limestone quarried from the hills behind it, which gives the whole town its pale, luminous face. Dig into that same stone and you get the other half of Saumur: miles of troglodyte cellars running under the vineyards, cool and dark, where Crémant de Loire ages in the rock and where they once grew mushrooms and cut homes straight into the cliff. Above it all sits the château, medieval fortress turned royal residence, watching the river. This is a town you walk. The centre is flat and small; the Loire runs along one side; the Saturday market fills Place Saint-Pierre under the half-timbered houses. Nothing here needs a car, and a car would only put glass between you and it.

Delivered on time at the hotel, and picked up right as we got back. Good communication, good price and decent bikes. Had a great day touring through the area on Tim’s bikes. Would recommend.

Wine, and horses, and the river
What made Saumur's name. The wine: Saumur-Champigny, a bright Cabernet Franc red from the vineyards at the town's edge, and the sparkling Crémant aged in those chalk cellars — tasted best where it's made, a short ride out along the water. The horses: Saumur is home to the Cadre Noir, France's elite riding school in their black uniforms, an equestrian tradition the town has carried for two centuries. The Loire itself — wide, slow, and majestic
The château and the old town
Walk up from the river to the fortress above, then back down through flat, tuffeau-white streets to the market square. All of it on foot, in an afternoon.
Cellars in the rock
The troglodyte cellars run for miles under the vines — cool, dark, and full of sparkling Loire wine. Some you tour by bike, lamps on1
Out along the water
The vineyards of Saumur-Champigny and the villages of Parnay and Montsoreau sit a gentle ride upriver — vines on one side, the Loire on the other.
